Residential storage price & payback period, explained

When homeowners consider solar-plus-storage, the first question is usually "how much does a home battery cost, and how long before it pays for itself?" This guide breaks down the real cost structure and shows you how to calculate your payback period.
A complete home energy storage system typically includes:
Larger capacity costs more. Common home sizes range from 5kWh to 10kWh, often accounting for over half of total cost. Bigger capacity stores more energy but raises the upfront investment.
LiFePO4 (LFP) is preferred for its safety and long life. It may cost slightly more upfront than some NMC options, but is more economical in the long run.
Battery-only (backup) vs. battery-plus-solar (self-consumption) differ significantly in cost. Adding solar shortens the payback period considerably.
Payback period ≈ total system investment ÷ annual electricity savings. The key is the time-of-use (TOU) tariff spread: store cheap off-peak energy and use it during peak hours to save on the bill.
