How to Choose a Hybrid Inverter: On-Grid vs Off-Grid

Pick the right inverter for your solar-storage system, whether connected to the grid or fully independent

The inverter is the brain of any solar-plus-storage system. A hybrid inverter manages PV generation, battery storage and household or business loads in one device, with seamless switching between on-grid and off-grid modes. But choosing the right model means understanding a few key specifications. This guide walks you through them.

On-Grid, Off-Grid, or Hybrid?

  • On-grid: ties to the utility and can export surplus; no battery backup during outages.
  • Off-grid: fully independent, requires a battery; ideal for remote sites without grid access.
  • Hybrid: combines both — grid-tied for saving, with battery backup and seamless switchover.

For most residential and C&I solar-storage projects in Southeast Asia and Central Asia, a hybrid inverter is the most flexible and future-proof choice.

1. Match Power and Voltage

Choose an inverter whose rated AC power and PV input match your loads and array. Check single-phase vs three-phase (three-phase suits larger homes, businesses and shops) and confirm the battery voltage range (e.g. 48V low-voltage or high-voltage) is compatible with your battery.

  • PV input: verify max PV power, MPPT range and number of MPPT trackers.
  • AC output: ensure continuous and surge power can start heavy loads like AC compressors.
  • Battery compatibility: confirm LiFePO4 support and communication (CAN/RS485).

2. Consider Parallel and Expansion Capability

Look for inverters that can run in parallel to scale power and support single or three-phase. Automatic addressing and parallel without complex configuration simplify installation and future expansion.

3. Check Key Features

  • Seamless on/off-grid switching: keeps loads running during grid outages.
  • Black-start: powers the system from battery when there is no grid.
  • Charge strategies: time-of-use, feed-in priority and self-consumption modes.
  • Battery-free output: useful if you want PV-only operation in some scenarios.

4. Prioritize Safety and Reliability

Confirm certifications (CE/IEC) and built-in protections — anti-islanding, over-voltage, over-current, short-circuit and surge. Good thermal design and IP-rated enclosures matter, especially outdoors in hot and humid regions.
