How C&I Energy Storage Makes Money

Peak shaving, demand charge management & payback period

Across Southeast Asia and Central Asia, factories, industrial parks and commercial buildings are asking the same question: "how does a battery actually make money, and how long is the payback?" This guide breaks down the four revenue models with real numbers.

Four ways C&I storage earns

1. Peak shaving / TOU arbitrage (the mainstream model)

Charge when tariffs are low (off-peak) and discharge when tariffs are high (peak). For most projects this is the primary revenue stream. With a typical two charge / two discharge daily cycle, the wider the tariff spread, the higher the return.

2. Demand charge management (the overlooked big one)

Commercial electricity bills usually include a demand charge based on the month's highest kW draw. Storage discharges during short load spikes, flattening your peak demand and cutting that charge every month. For factories with spiky loads, this can rival or exceed arbitrage savings.

3. Backup power (avoiding downtime losses)

For semiconductor lines, cold storage, data centers and precision manufacturing, a single outage can cost far more than the battery itself. Here the value is measured in losses avoided, not revenue earned.

4. Higher solar self-consumption

If you already run rooftop PV, surplus daytime energy is often exported at a low feed-in rate. Adding storage lets you keep that energy and use it after sunset, lifting self-consumption from ~60% to over 90%.

Example: what peak shaving actually saves

Take a 100kW / 215kWh C&I storage cabinet (charged off-peak, discharged at peak, two cycles per day):

  • Usable energy per cycle: ~200kWh (reserving headroom instead of full depth discharge)
  • Daily discharge: ~400kWh (two cycles)
  • Assumed peak–off-peak spread: US$0.10/kWh
  • Daily saving: ~US$40
  • 330 operating days per year: ~US$13,000 per year

Where the tariff spread is wider — common in parts of Southeast Asia with industrial peak premiums — or where demand charges are also reduced, annual savings rise further.

How to size a C&I system

C&I projects are specified on two axes: power (kW) and energy capacity (kWh).

  • 100kW / 215kWh cabinet: small-to-mid factories, malls, EV charging hubs. Compact, plug-and-play.
  • 200–500kW / 0.5–1MWh: industrial parks, mid-size manufacturing, multiple units in parallel.
  • 1MWh+ containerized BESS: heavy industry, microgrids and long-duration backup — scaleable to 3–5MWh per container.

Calculating the payback period

Core formula: payback ≈ total investment ÷ annual combined savings, where annual savings = arbitrage + demand charge reduction + solar gain + backup value.

  • Wide tariff spread + demand charge management: typical payback 4–6 years, faster in some markets.
  • Arbitrage only, moderate spread: around 6–8 years.
  • With incentives or high backup value: can shorten to 3–5 years.

With LiFePO4 cells rated for 6000+ cycles, system life exceeds 10 years — meaning years of net profit after payback.

Five factors that drive your return

  • Tariff spread between peak and off-peak — the foundation of arbitrage.
  • Load profile — whether your demand concentrates in peak hours.
  • Cycling strategy — one vs. two cycles per day directly changes utilization.
  • Cycle life — 6000+ cycles is what makes a 10-year life realistic.
  • System efficiency — PCS efficiency and HVAC consumption quietly eat into returns.

Why C&I projects standardise on LiFePO4

Compared with NMC, LiFePO4 (LFP) offers better thermal stability, longer cycle life and lower cost. Outdoor cabinet and container designs add air-conditioning thermal management, fire suppression and multi-layer BMS protection — built for daily high-frequency cycling in demanding climates. Grade-A cells plus a five-year warranty keep long-term O&M risk low.
